Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
