The Gaming Giant Brings Onboard Popular Battle Royale Lead to Rescue Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title
The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently developing the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Shift Comes After Mixed Reception
Brinkman assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last autumn.
On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had indicated the need for a more defined direction.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
The news follows a comparable action taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I know you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I shared you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and talented developers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to persist.”
Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the necessity for a sharper identity.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to mind and reimagined the title with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To boost the incredible advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to announce the new hire as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following a period of conversations, he officially joins us on Monday, October 20.
His guidance and experience in the PVP shooter space is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half developing and leading some of the most well-known series in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in welcoming him next week. We are all eager to persist observing the development of the game in the weeks to follow.
The President

Brinkman previously was employed at Treyarch and Activision in various production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, prior to that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Vision
The upcoming game was unveiled in last year alongside a community playtest. Initially, the developers described the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the official summary states. "Take on the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and challenges that evolve every round. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, gamble everything, and pray your group can earn top ranking? The option is yours."
The game has not yet received an confirmed release date or supported systems, but players can expect further news as development progresses.
