A 60-day voyage around Australia was terminated in the wake of the tragic passing of an older female passenger who was left behind by the ship on a isolated island.

The passenger had been walking on the remote island with fellow passengers from the Coral Adventurer, but parted ways from the party for a break. The liner departed without her and came back after some time after the crew realised the woman was unaccounted for.

An extensive hunt found her remains the following day.

Investigative bodies are examining the event, in coordination with police and the state coroner.

Chief Executive of the voyage organizer stated that guests and personnel on the vessel were informed that the rest of the voyage had been called off due to the "unfortunate death and earlier technical problems".

Through an announcement, he further stated that guests would be issued a full refund, and said the organization was working "to arrange the travel back of the travelers via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also released an updated announcement, and said they had "issued a directive to the Master" preventing any additional guests from entering the liner.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the vessel in the port city upon its coming back.

Chronology of Incidents

The vessel first departed Cairns on the 24th of October, and was merely two days into the journey at the time of the elderly woman's demise. Lizard Island was the opening port on the journey.

Passengers on the vessel - who typically pay tens of thousands of dollars to participate in the voyage - were transported there for a daily excursion with the possibility of hiking or snorkelling.

Relatives Reaction

The child of the victim said that her relatives was "stunned and saddened that the ship left the location after an scheduled outing without my mother".

Through her comments, she portrayed her mother as an "vigorous octogenarian" who was a member of a hiking group.

"Based on limited facts we have been told, it seems that there was a failure of responsibility and common sense," she mentioned.

She continued that she hoped the examination would be able to pinpoint what "the company should have done that might have saved Her being".

"Based on information from the authorities that it was a very hot period, and mum fell ill on the mountain ascent," she explained.

Operator Response

Through an announcement, the Head verified that the company was "collaborating extensively with authorities to aid their examination".

The ship caters for up to one hundred twenty passengers with 46 personnel, according to company information. It was specifically designed to reach isolated regions of the nation's shoreline and is fitted with "small boats" - compact vessels used to take passengers on day excursions.

Occurrences like this are rare, and passenger vessels have systems to record which travelers are getting on or disembarking, according to industry experts.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] aboard simply isn't an option," an authority remarked.

Vessel operators consider these methods extremely carefully and have "sophisticated systems in place to stop such events from occurring," the authority continued.

"This seems to be probably a shocking - and tragic - single occurrence."
